(00:00):
Alright, you have landed in the right place if you've been pulling your hair out trying to start or grow your following on Instagram. In this video, I'm going to share my five step strategy to get your first 1000 followers in 30 days. Now this strategy is super simple, it only requires 15 minutes a day, so you can tend to all the other things that you need to in your life and in your business. But before we get to that, if you do not want to miss out on cool hacks and ideas to help you grow your business, please be sure to hit the subscribe and notify buttons now. I'm Vitina, co-founder of Brand Therapy Sessions. And one of the most common questions we get from our students is, "How do I grow my Instagram following?" In today's environment, using social media as part of your brand strategy is super important.
(00:52):
Think about it. What is the one thing your business needs? You need people to discover your business, and I'm not talking about the old school awareness. I'm talking about the right people knowing about your business, talking about your business and getting excited about your business. And this is where social media really stands apart from anything else you could do to help build word of mouth fast. Social media, and particularly Instagram, is also a really unique place where you get to build authentic connection with your audience. And that connection, that's what's going to lead to more paying clients. I do want to be clear here though, yes, social media is super important to build dimension for your brand, but you do not need millions of followers for this to be effective. You just need the right people paying attention. And trust me, if you can attract a 1000 loyal fans, you will be well on your way to building a successful business.
(02:05):
And that's what we're going to talk about in this video. This episode is packed with information, but there is no need to take notes, you can save the pen and paper because I created a free Workbook for you with all the content I'm covering in this video, including in-depth exercises to help you with your Instagram strategy and six Instagram templates to get you started. Okay, now let's dive into my five step strategy. The first thing you need to know before you dive into creating anymore content is know your ICA, your ideal client avatar. And you might've heard this many times before in other videos, or even if you've watched some of our past videos, we talk about this a lot, but this is the first step to optimizing your time on social media and frankly, optimizing your time in your business.
(02:57):
So definitely take time to think about who it is you want to attract and who it is you serve through your business. And if you don't have any clue who that ideal client is, we created an episode focused on solely this. Definitely check out episode two of the Brand Bootcamp Series. Lesley did an incredible job breaking this down for you. You can find the link, I'll leave it up here somewhere. And I'll also leave the link below in the description. But seriously, once you are crystal clear on who your ideal client is or who that dream client is, you can now start moving into creating valuable content for them. When it comes to creating valuable content, there are a few approaches you can take. You can take the approach of highly emotional content, or on the other hand, you could take the approach of highly informational content, or maybe you do a mix of both, but no matter which route you take, make sure that your content still aligns with your brand values.
(03:58):
You want to make sure that your content emanates those values through whatever you're posting. But if you do decide to take the emotional route, think about how you can delight your audience and think about how you can make their lives better just by interacting with you. To give you a few examples, I'll pull a few up on my phone and read them to you just so you can get a better sense of what I mean. So this first one is from Spirit Daughter. It says, "It's time to stop playing small and remember that you are the stars, the moon and the whole damn universe." So that would be an example of an emotional post. The next one here is from Alex Elle, it says, "Gentle reminder, you not being for everyone is a divine blessing. Do not get distracted by folks who are not meant to see your vision."
(04:49):
And the last one I'll bring up is from We're Not Really Strangers. And on this post, it says, "You're judging yourself again, stop that." The emotion might not actually have anything to do with your product or with your services, but it's that emotion that sticks to you and your brand. Now, if you do decide to take the more informational route, this is taking all of your wisdom, all of your knowledge and filtering it through the lens of your ideal client. Thinking about what would best serve them right now, maybe with something that they're struggling with, or maybe something that they desire. Again, I did pull a few examples here to show you what I mean by this. So the first one here is from Liz Listens and in this post, it starts with, "How to have a good relationship today. Ideas for connecting with someone you love."
(05:41):
And in the following slides, she goes more in-depth with this, I won't dive into that, but just to give you an example. And next we have one from The Holistic Psychologist, and this one says, "Signs you're becoming more emotionally mature." Again, more points and more informational. And the last one here is from Dr. Joe Dispenza. And this one says, "The biological model of change." And then it breaks it down with familiar past and new future. So all three of these would be examples of more informational posts. So you could stick to one route of either informational or emotional posts, or maybe you want to do a mix of both. We choose to do a mix of both on our Align Creative Minds account, but whether or not you are giving away bits and pieces of your knowledge away for free, the idea is to leave people better than when you found them.
(06:40):
This is what's going to help build trust with your audience. And this is what's going to position you as the expert in your fields. And it also helps people get a taste or a sense of what it might be like to work with you. And I can already hear it, you might be thinking, "But Vitina, won't people steal my ideas?" And unfortunately, you have no control over this, but you, my friend, are so unique and no one can be you. So people can have the same training, people can have the same knowledge, but they can't quite do it like you because they're not you. So this is where you really got to trust that the right clients will align with you. Now, I am curious, what is an account that you find inspirational and applies these principles well? Take a moment and let me know in the comments below. The next step is having a clear bio.
(07:36):
This is the first thing people see when they land on your page. So you want to use this space strategically to capture the attention of your ideal client as quickly as possible, letting them know what you can do for them or what they can expect from following you. And again, you're writing your bio from the lens of your dream client. I did pull a few more examples here, so you can get a sense of what I'm talking about. So the first example we have is from Author Lalah Delia, and she writes, "Helping you vibrate higher daily. Best-selling book everywhere books are sold. Author, spiritual writer, wellness educator." With an emoji finger pointing down to her bio saying book, blog, work and more.
(08:21):
So, you know from this bio that she's interested in spirituality, in wellness, that's what she wants to educate people on and helping you vibrate higher daily. So if that's something you're interested in, you're probably giving her a follow. Next we have The Holistic Psychologist again, and in her bio, she writes, "Psychologist." So that's her profession. And then the next line is, "I teach you to heal and consciously create a new version of yourself." Hashtag self healers with text and her number, this is part of her brand, with an emoji finger pointing down, saying, "My book, How To Do The Work." Which is what she's recently promoting. And last we have Millie, who's an online educator and she writes, "Keeping influencers up to date on the latest strategies and trends on social media." Boom, we know that she's attracting influencers, or even if you're not an aspiring influencer, if you're interested in strategies and trends on social media, you're probably still going to give her a follow. She puts her email in her bio. I don't necessarily think that's, well, necessary, but that would be a personal decision.
(09:34):
And I'm sure she has a strategy around that. And then you have the arrow pointing down with a call to action, a 100+ Instagram Captions eBook. So you'll also notice with all three of these bios that they include a lot of emojis. And these emojis are meant to be more than just cute, they're meant to capture the emotional energy that you can't with a limited character count. So when it comes to writing your own Instagram bio, try including the following, what you do, why you do it, your purpose, who you do it for, what sets you apart and a clear call to action. Next you'll want to focus on consistency, and this is twofold. First you'll want to focus on posting consistently. And by all means, if you do not have the capacity to post every day, even if you post three times a week, this will help you stay top of your audience's mind.
(10:34):
And the second piece you'll want to stay consistent with is your brand aesthetic, your tone and your message. And you don't need to hire a designer to help you with this either. We created two free tutorials to help you get clear on your font styles and your color palette for your social media posts. I'll link this up here somewhere, and I'll also link the videos in the resources mentioned section in the description. But having a consistent tone and a consistent brand aesthetic will help your audience start recognizing your content. And keep in mind, consistency helps establish credibility, which over a period of time helps build trust. And last, but probably the most important step in the strategy to grow is actually engaging with others. Instagram is a social platform, meaning you need to be social. So even if you're someone who doesn't necessarily like being on social media, with what I'm about to share, you'll have a lot more intention as you engage on the platform.
(11:44):
That way you're not getting lost in the rabbit hole of distraction. All you need to do is put 15 minutes a day in your calendar to engage. And you can do this in the morning as you have your coffee, whatever you need to do to optimize to get this done, you do you. But what we're going to do is go on an adventure of liking and commenting on other people's posts, but with some strategy. So the first group of people I want you to focus on are people who have been commenting and liking your posts. So take a look at your latest three posts and see who's been commenting and who's been liking, go to those accounts. And if their account happens to be private, c'est la vie, you can't do anything about that. But if their account is open, great.
(12:32):
What you're going to do, you're not going to follow them, all you're going to do is like their latest posts or their latest three posts. The three posts is definitely going to be more impactful. And if you do see something that is super interesting to you, and you genuinely love talking about, leave a comment, that's going to be even more impactful to your followers. And once you have gone through the people who have been liking and engaging with your posts, you're going to take a look at the second group of people, which are people who have recently followed you. Again, do the same thing, you're going to go to their profile, you're going to like a few photos. And again, if you see something that's interesting to you, leave a comment. So once you've actually engaged with your community, I want you to take a look and think of five to 10 accounts that your ideal client would be following or hanging out around.
(13:25):
And these accounts might be accounts that do something similar to you or offer something similar to you, but maybe have a larger following. So let's just say you are a mindset coach. Maybe you look at a mindset coach with a larger following and start engaging with their audience. That way you know the people who are following them and engaging with them are already interested in that sort of content. So make sure that their content is aligned with you. So once you have those five to 10 accounts, I want you to look in three places. First, you're going to look at who's commenting on their posts, those people are definitely the most engaged. Next you're going to look at who's liking their posts. And after that, you're going to look at who their new followers are, and you're going to do the same thing, but with their following, you're going to go to their followers and go to their account.
(14:20):
And you're going to do the same thing with engaging with their posts, liking a few posts and commenting on a post if you find it interesting. And don't look at this as just as an engagement exercise, this is also a research tool. You are firsthand looking at what your ideal client, your dream client is interested in, and also what they're asking. That way you can actually create content that really serves them. And hey, if you want to take this up a notch, stick to the 15 minutes if that's already a lot for you, but if you do want to go a little wild here, definitely consider engaging 30 minutes before you post and 15 minutes after you post.
(15:04):
I know that's 45 minutes, which you might not have, especially if you're a busy business owner, but that will crank it up a notch if you do want to grow your following fast. All right, that is it for my five step strategy to go from zero to a 1000 real quick.
